Distinguished and Famous people from Prospect

👢 R. M. Williams

Reginald Murray Williams established an early manufacturing workshop behind his father’s home at 5 Percy Street, Prospect, after making boots and saddlery in the northern Flinders Ranges. The suburban iron shed became the base for products developed through practical bush experience. His first helper, Charley Ferguson, asked to learn how to make a pair of boots. Advertising and recommendations from customers helped the business expand. The international name thus has a distinctly modest Prospect setting behind it: a family address, stacked timber and a workshop. Customers from the bush knew the proprietor as Reg, while his staff generally called him Mr Williams.

💡 Ken Gerard

Ken Gerard was born at Prospect in 1912 and developed the engineering knowledge behind an expanding family manufacturing business. Studying part time, he gained an electrical-engineering diploma and later became factory manager at Gerard Electrics Manufacturers. His interest in plastics complemented his brother Geoff’s commercial skills as the Bowden works grew. He also taught plastics, served on the governing council of South Australia’s technical institute and worked on electrical standards. Prospect is Ken’s birthplace, before the factory and professional commitments elsewhere. His contribution shows the technical study, testing and teaching behind products that could look deceptively simple once installed.
